This is a procedure that is performed for individuals with knee pain that is resistant to other treatments. During this procedure, the 3 main nerves that supply the knee are actually blocked for relief of knee pain. If the nerve block is successful, a rhizotomy or radiofrequency ablation is performed during which the nerves are cauterized. The nerves that supply the knee joint (genicular nerves) only supply the joint itself. They are not necessary for walking or standing. The pain relief from this procedure can be profound and allow people to walk with minimal knee pain for 8-12 months. The genicular nerves eventually regrow and the pain may return. The procedure can be repeated at that time if necessary.
